Uganda: Fufa Must Always First Consult, Cecafa Advises

Nairobi — COUNCIL of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) yesterday advised FUFA to consult their secretariat before raising issues on the Senior Challenge Cup to be hosted by Uganda next month.

The council publicity secretary Finny Muyeshi said it was best that any issues pertaining to the regional event due in Kampala are first channelled to their headquarters in Nairobi.

Muyeshi was reacting to a statement by FUFA spokesman Rogers Mulindwa who opposed CECAFA's intended plans to include two guest teams at this year's event in order to cut costs.

Plans are at advanced stage by CECAFA and tournament sponsors GTV to invite two countries from either the continent or the Middle East to feature in the regional event.

In a quick rejoinder yesterday, Muyeshi said FUFA should raise any issue at a senior level between CECAFA and FUFA later this month in Kampala. "Inviting two guest teams for the Senior Challenge Cup would add value to the tournament, sponsor and fans," the official said. He said it would not be the first time guest teams are invited.

In his objection, Mulindwa had said the federation would need an extra sh200m to host the extra teams. "The power to invite belongs to CECAFA but we are opposed to it because of its financial implications.

When you look at the budget, we are already constrained," Mulindwa said .

CECAFA and GTV have pumped sh997m in sponsorship for the tournament to cater for air tickets for the participating teams, their accommodation, internal transport, prizes and other logistics.
