Namibia: Wesbank-MX Dash for Cash

Windhoek — Pee Wees and roaring engines will be the order of the day when the annual popular Wesbank Moto Cross Dash for Cash competition, gets under way in earnest at the Gallina Race track outside Windhoek on Saturday.

All ravers and punks including party animals are to converge at the Gallina Moto Cross Park for what can be easily described as the most exciting event on the Moto Cross calendar.

One ticket gets you first class international Moto Cross, Freestyle and the evening's highlight: two performances by Snotkop as part of the Tafel Lager Punk Night.

For the motor sport fans, there is of course only one thing on their mind: who will become Namibia's International Champion and who wins the big cheque in the "Wesbank-MX Dash for Cash".

The spectacular racing day last weekend has shown that there are a couple of aspirants. "Pela" Pierre Alexandre Renet from France leads the pack with a maximum 60 points, closely followed by Russian Vitaly Tonkov in the Neo Paints Open Class.

There is still a chance for the Russian to win with local hero Tommy Gous also remaining within a shot spoiling the party, should lady luck smile on the Namibian rider.

The South African Liam O'Farrel proved quite a hard nut to crack as he kept up with the top riders in the heats, but his good showing was short lived and was badly exposed in the E.L.Sea Products King of the Dirt race where could only collect a paltry 6 points.

The same goes for his fellow countryman Lloyd Vercueil, who lost valuable points in the King of the Dirt as a result of his disqualification. Christoph Schade from Germany started with a good 6th place, but disappeared into obscurity - never to pose any serious challenge again.

In the Bike & Quad Clinic 125ccm Class, Ross Branch from Botswana is firmly in the driving seat with 57 points, ahead of defending champion Richard van der Westhuizen from South Africa. Former Namibian rider Björn Bierbrauer, who now resides in Germany, is breathing heavily down their neck in third spot.

Ryan Frerichs offered a solid performance and ranks 4th at the moment while the "Flying Dutchman" from the Netherlands, Mart de Jong, started with an exceptional 2nd place, then a good 5th place but ultimately made a blunder in the King of the Dirt race. The lost points would have come in handy and could have serious repercussions for title ambitions.

Kai Pritzen, former Namibian rider who has since relocated to Johannesburg ranks 6th. His position could have been better but he lost valuable points because of a crash in the second heat. Women's Vice-World champion Steffi Laier from Germany could also pose a serious threat for her male counterparts.

Another rider from Germany and former "Namibian International Champion" Benjamin Kolberg, had average outings by his own standards, but exploded in the King of the Dirt with a remarkable 5th place.

Castrol 65cc Class

There seem to be no stopping Tristan Muller and barring a miracle - the Okahandja-based lad is almost certainly taking centre stage again - leaving Michael Barlow and Matthew Nederlof to battle it out for 2nd place.

In the Honda Pupkewitz 85cc Class, German rider Stefan Eckerold is leading the pack with 57 points, closely trailed by local "wunderkind" Mark Sternagel with 54 points with Tristan Muller and Pauli Loots battling for the remaining third place.

Joker's Pizzeria Clubmen's Class

Angolan rider Jose Teixeira posted maximum points last weekend, an achievement he definitely wants to repeat on Saturday, but his opponents, the Namibian pair of Frank Steyn and Mark Ratheiser are eager to dismantle him from the podium.

South African Eric Williams is leading the Red Square Industries Quads A Class with 50 points in the colours of Honda Pupkewitz, followed by up and coming Namibian rider Jean Venter with 49 points. Michael Behnke is stuck in 3rd place with 48 points.

Ecki Spoerer has taken a healthy lead in the Wire Industries Quad B Class, well ahead of Eugene Slippers and Gideon van Sittert.

Spot Motor Spares Ladies Quads

Mandy Huysamen from Windhoek is up there but will have to look over her shoulder for the danger posed by South African Leandry van Blommenstein and Anneke Steenkamp from Namibia, while Namibia's "wonder girl" Cee-Anne Greyling remains in contention for top honours.

Afribeer Quads-Clubmen's Class

There was nothing much to write home about the riding skills of the Angolan pair of Caldeira and Guannios during last weekend's competition, leaving many to the conclusion that this particular race will be a solely Namibian affair between Leigh Jean Skoppelitus, André Basson and Tertius Joubert.

The Wesbank-MX Dash for Cash Moto Cross race will be wrapped up with the Shell Helix Gladiator Freestyle Show, followed by what promises to be the highlight of the day, the Tafel Lager Punk Night with Snotkop from South Africa.
