Uganda: Coca-Cola Boosts Cancer Fight

Kampala — CENTURY Bottling Company, the makers of Coca-Cola products, have launched a campaign dubbed 'Buy one Help One' to help raise funds to fight cancer.

Hassan Saleh, the country sales and marketing manager, said they would contribute sh2 from every 300ml bottle of the firm's products sold to the National Cancer Care Fund to create awareness about the disease.

He said they hope to raise between sh80m-100m by the end of the month. The Fund needs sh650m to buy a chemotherapy unit to treat cancer.

"Coca-Cola is committed to improving the quality of life in the communities where we operate by coming up with initiatives that add real value to our customers," Saleh said.

He urged Ugandans to embrace the cause by buying 300ml Coca-Cola products, saying it would contribute towards saving the lives of a cancer patients.

Florence Mugisha, the National Cancer Care Fund-Uganda chief executive officer, said the mobile chemotherapy unit (Van) was needed to help them reach and provide treatment to cancer patients in their localities.

"Most unprivileged Ugandans cannot afford chemotherapy treatment yet it is crucial.

"However, this initiative will create hope for tomorrow by taking chemotherapy where it is needed most - in the country-side," Mugisha said.

She called on individuals, charities trusts, foundations and the public to help poor patients fight cancer.

The National Cancer Care Fund is a charity organisation working to enhance the lives of those affected and afflicted by the disease through a robust awareness campaign.

"With this support from Coca-Cola the programme shall save or improve the quality of millions of lives affected by cancer in Uganda today."

We shall be able to reach as many vulnerable people as possible," she said
