Uganda: Magistrate Told to Vacate Land

Kampala — KIRUHUURA district Grade Two magistrate Kopan Muhanguzi has been ordered to vacate a piece of land he allegedly grabbed in Katenga in Mitooma sub-county.

Bushenyi deputy resident district commissioner Nickson Kabuye gave the directive on Friday after 13 people filed complaints accusing Muhanguzi of grabbing their land.

This was during a meeting between Kabuye and the residents at Katenga Community Hall.

One of the complainants, Benard Forgod, alleged that Muhanguzi wanted to force the people neighbouring his (Muhanguzi) Mitooma Vocational School to sell their land to him.

"When I came to develop my land, which is near the institute, I found Muhanguzi had already fenced it off," Forgod said.

He said Muhanguzi had approached him to buy his land but he (Forgod) refused.

Kabuye urged Muhanguzi to produce documents of ownership.

"If he cannot produce documents supporting his claims, he should vacate the land so that the true owners can develop it. We have powers to arrest him because nobody is above the law," Kabuye said.
