Kampala — ENTEBBE Municipality has launched a campaign to rid all schools of asbestos roofs. Asbestos was used during the colonial era and according to Entebbe mayor Stephen Kabuye, scientists no longer recommend its use.
While opening a re-roofed block at Kiwafu Primary School that cost sh11m, Kabuye who is also an old boy of the school, said: "We shall not wait to see whether asbestos causes cancer as scientific reports state."
The campaign that kicked off this financial year will see all asbestos roofs in Kiwafu removed."
Kabuye said re-roofing the schools requires a lot of money, which is not readily available forcing the council to handle one school at a time.
After Kiwafu Primary School, other schools to be re-roofed are St Thereza Primary School, St Joseph Katabi Primary School and Lake Victoria Primary School where only the P.7 block has been completed.
At St Joseph Katabi Primary School, one block was last year renovated by Entebbe Women's Association (EWA), one of the NGOs in the municipality.
Kabuye urged parents to join hands with the Government and perform their duties by providing uniforms and books to their children as the Government concentrates on putting up buildings and maintaining the welfare of teachers.
