Uganda: 'Goats Contribute to Hunger in Katakwi'

Kampala — KATAKWI district is facing hunger due to failure by the district to control goats, the chief administrative officer has said.

"We should stop lamenting and address real issues. Much as we are trying to tackle food insecurity, hunger will continue to bite unless the goats that eat people's crops are stopped," James Nkata said.

Nkata made the remarks at the ActionAid Uganda-sponsored World Food Day celebrations at Omodoi sub-county headquarters on Thursday.

"I don't want to waste my time on things that are obvious. I am urging the chairperson to arrest all goats found roaming in the district. Let him order the district veterinary officer to do that. If he fails, I will show him (the veterinary officer) the exit," he warned. He said goats had become a menace in the district.

He hailed ActionAid for helping the district fight food insecurity, but added that relief was not the solution.

ActionAid donated ox-ploughs, seeds and oxen worth £32,518 (sh108m) to farmers in the district.

The donation, which is to benefit over 3,799 farmers, was from the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission.

Following the Joseph Kony-led insurgency in the area, about 1.6 million people were forced from their homes into camps.
