Kampala — RESIDENTS of Kitumbi sub-county in Mubende district have launched a campaign to construct classroom blocks in the primary schools in their area.
The self-help project was started recently at Kalyabulo Primary School, which is one of the worst schools in the sub-county.
"Most of our schools are in poor conditions. Even P.7 pupils could not do their examinations from here. We sent them to other schools and we used this opportunity to work on the structures," Emmanuel Nsubuga, the sub-county chairperson, said.
He appealed to the Government to improve the schools. "Most of our schools are in bad shape. There are no teachers' houses and the teachers are few. This is a new sub-county and given the little resources, we decided to help ourselves," he added.
The sub-county chief, Charles Kijjambu, said the sub-county had 16 Government-aided schools, but none of them has a permanent structure.
"We are expecting sh18m from the Government to complete classroom, office blocks and Kyankondwa Primary School.
But the other schools are also in poor state. Our sub-county budget on education is only sh450,000," Kijjambu said.
Parents appealed to the Government to construct more schools in the sub-county.
"We have been using grass but we have nowhere to get it. Our children are sent to the trading centres when rain comes.
"They cannot study in such conditions," George William Rwigyema said.
