Kampala — FLOODS have stopped the construction of the Moyo-Obongi road.
The 77-kilometre project, that is to cost sh500m, stalled in September when the River Nile burst its banks due to heavy rains and displaced people in Itula and Gimara sub-counties in Obongi.
In a letter dated September 27, addressed to Tarsis Kabwegyere, the disaster preparedness minister, Hassan Fungaroo, the Obongi MP, called for urgent assistance to the residents.
"The floods have affected people's gardens, destroying crops such as cassava, sweet potatoes, simsim, groundnuts, and sorghum," he said.
"The people are suffering with no government intervention. Soon, many people will start contracting water-borne diseases and starve," he warned.
Fungaroo appealed to the Government and NGOs to provide the affected residents with relief items.
Recently, two people in Adjumani district died when their boat capsized on River Tete after heavy rains.
