Nigeria: Commnual Crisis - Health Ministry Donates Drugs to Victims

Uyo — The donation of drugs and other medical items by the Federal Ministry of Health to victims of the Ikot Akpan Udo community in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State and Amazaba people of Eastern Obolo communal crisis has been described as not only kind, but also a timely intervention.

Speaking at Government House, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Deputy Governor, Engr Patrick Ekpotu, who received the items on behalf of the state government, said the gesture from the ministry was a clear indication of the fact that it was not lagging behind in the overall effort of the Yar'Adua administration to make life better for the people of Nigeria.

He therefore, expressed the gratitude of the government and people of the state to the minister of Health and members of the team, for providing such assistance, which he noted, would go a long way in meeting the medical needs of the people affected by the communal crisis.

He said Godswill Akpabio administration was people centered and trying its best to make the victims comfortable, adding that the affected people, have continued to receive assistance from the state government.

The deputy governor who noted that the people affected by the communal crisis would definitely appreciate the drugs and other medical items from the Federal Ministry of Health, said, "while hoping that such crisis does not occur again in the state, the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies would always come to the aid of Akwa Ibom State."

The team leader from the Federal Epidemiology/Health Emergency Response of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. John Kehinde, while presenting the drugs and other items to the deputy governor, prayed that such crisis would not re-occur in the state. He urged the people to regard themselves as brothers and as such, should co-exist peacefully.

The drugs and items donated included: 30 cartons of oral rehydration salt; 1 drum of chlorine powder; 1 carton of panadol; 100 vials (1 Packwt) benzhyphenizol; 100 vials (1 packet) chloramphenoicol caps; and copies of Integrated Disease Surveillance Response.
