Citbank Nigeria has restated its commitment to the development of the Nigerian economy, promising to continue its grassroots development agenda through constantly providing succour for the less privileged members of the society.
The bank, as parts of activities marking its 2008 Global Community Day, mobilised volunteers, mainly members of its staff, in addition to their families and friends in Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt to provide support to vulnerable and disadvantaged children and youth, donating relief items and gifts to the less privileged members of the society.
Speaking in Lagos during its presentation of relief items and cash worth over N750,000 to the Children's Emergency Relief Foundation (CERF) in Ikorodu town, the Managing Director of the bank, Mr. Emeka Emuwa disclosed that it intends to continue to contribute its own quota to the development of the society where it operates in.
He said, "Given the current financial and social crisis around the world, I believe this year's event was especially rewarding for those who participated. It is part of our resolve to give back to the community where we operate.
Items and cash worth over N750, 000, including food, books, school bags, mosquito nets among others were also donated to the children and CERF. Part of the money donated was to be used to fund the completion of a bore-hole project for the Mosinmi Posehin village, Ikorodu that was abandoned some years back.
The quality of life in this area will be hugely uplifted with the provision of clean water. Events such as these ensure that Citibank continues to live up to its responsibilities to the local communities around us."
In Port-Harcourt, volunteers from the bank visited the De Marillac Center for Street Children where they donated items for the center including bunk beds, mattresses, mosquito nets and food items. In Abuja, volunteers visited the Motherless Babies Home in Karu and assisted with refurbishment of the home.
According to Emuwa, "Citibank's Global Community Day is a worldwide effort involving hundreds of projects in hundreds of cities around the world. Recognising that many Citibank's employees volunteer year-round in their communities, Global Community Day celebrates Citibank's volunteer spirit worldwide on one day. Local volunteer teams will be working on a variety of projects addressing specific community needs including literacy, housing, environmental protection, nutrition, and health care."
"On Global Community Day, Citibank's employees in more than 100 countries around the world will assemble to make a difference in their local communities. In these difficult times, community engagement is more important than ever because the needs are so great.
Whether it is teaching financial education to young people; planting trees to combat deforestation; refurbishing schools in poor communities; or serving meals to the homeless, Citibank's employees will turn out to volunteer. Global Community Day is one of many ways, from sound business practices to our Foundation programs that Citibank strengthens the communities where we live and work," He added.
