Kampala — Makerere University science laboratories are outdated and ill-equipped, MPs on the social services committee have learnt.
The MPs were yesterday visiting the faculties of science, technology and agriculture to assess the problems affecting the institution. The visit follows petitions by students.
Mackay Okure, the Faculty of Technology deputy dean, said: "Some of the machines were donated to us when the faculty was starting."
The Faculty of Agriculture hardly had equipment. "We have limited funding. At Kabanyoro, we have only two tractors. This financial year, we were given sh99m to cover two semesters," said Samuel Kyamanywa, the Faculty of Agriculture dean.
Elly Sabiiti, a lecturer at faculty said: "We have been blamed for grooming half-baked students, but we cannot take them to the field for practicals with limited funding."
The MPs discovered that part of Lumumba Hall was closed for renovation in 2006.
John Ekudu, the dean of students, told the MPs that funds for renovation were not forthcoming.
The MPs also learnt that the library extension lacked furniture and books.
Lilian Musoke, the librarian, said: "Part of the development fee which the students are rejecting is to be used to restock the library."
