Kampala — Government is to spend about sh1b to set up model villages in the country this financial year, the Senior Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation, Joan Kakwenzire, has said.
Addressing Rukungiri residents at the launch of Rwentondo model village in Kagunga sub-county, Kakwenzire said about sh130m would be spent in every district to create a model parish which will act as a demonstration farm in the district.
She said the project is a Presidential initiative to get people out of poverty.
Kakwenzire said each model parish would earmark projects they can do best and can be emulated by other parishes.
Rukungiri district has 77 parishes which are expected to learn from Rwentondo.
Kakwenzire urged residents to start modernising their attitudes and family lives before they are given projects to look after.
"We shall work with those who are quick to implement our policies; like having a clean homestead with all necessities for human beings," she said.
Kakwenzire warned that families without latrines, laundry places and clean houses would not be included in the project.
She said the project would provide citizens with cows, improved goats, hens, pigs and seeds.
"We are giving these 'things' free of charge, but we want you to own this project. Technical teams will come and identify what a family can look after well so that they give them according to their choice and capacity," she said.
Kakwenzire said the implementation had so far covered 14 out of the 80 districts expected to benefit from the project.
Former health minister, who is also the area MP, Jim Muhwezi, said the project was one of the Presidential pledges during his recent visit in the district.
He urged the residents to welcome and implement it so that by 2011 every family will earn sh20m or more. He warned parents who fail to send children to school that they risked going to jail.
