Angola: Government Ceases Functions of State-Run Air Carrier's Board

12 November 2008

Da — The Angolan Government Wednesday here ceased the mandate of directors board of the State-owned air-liner TAAG and guided the ministries of Economy, Finance and Transports to appoint a managing commission and a steering committee of the company's refound programme.

The measures taken Wednesday by the Cabinet Council, in an extraordinary session, chaired

by the President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, are due to the gravity of the situation facing the firm.

According to a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Transports, sent to press, "the Government has decided not to extend any more the discussion that has been followed up on TAAG and, nstead to introduce determined changes that lead to definite reversion of the situation facing the air-carrier.

Despite the efforts carried and the support given by the Government, TAAG directors board, that ceases its functions, "did not succeed in leading a development of the company that could undisputedly overcome the alleged operative and security obstacles for the exclusion of TAAG from the European air space, which should have been one of its main achievements", reads the press release.

In technical terminology of business strategy, this kind of process is called in English as turnaround", according to the communiqué.

Turnaround is a joint of strategic actions defined and carried out to change the negative path of a business.

In July, 2007, the European Commission included TAAG in the list of air companies forbidden to operate over EU air space.
