Abuja — The United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) has stated that with the current growth rate of 3.2 per cent, Nigeria's population would increase to 296 million in 2030.
The representative of UNFPA, in Nigeria, Sidiku Coulibaly, said this during a workshop on the country programme of action plan for 2009 - 2012 organised by UNFPA and the Federal Government, put the present population of the country at 148million.
He said Nigeria's population had grown from 126.1 million in 2003 to 144 million in 2007 and is currently projected at 148 million from the 2006 population census.
At the current annual population growth rate of 3.2 per cent, the population is expected to redouble by the year 2030.
Coulibaly further put the country's high infant mortality rate of 100 per cent live births and 800 per 100,000 live births respectively.
He added that 15 states had high prevalence of HIV rate.
According to him, ages of people living with the disease of HIV/AIDS range from 15 to 24 years.
