Liberia: Ellen On Country's U.S.$3.7 Billion Debt

Zorzor — President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says significant progress has been made to reduce Liberia's external debts.

The President told a cross section of Lofa citizens during a meeting to discuss the government's Poverty Reduction Strategy(PRS), that the debts were accumulated dating as far back to the 1980s but her government is making tremendous effort to have the debts waived.

The President who was briefing the citizens on the four pillars of the government's PRS said good progress was being made to waive the debts so as to enable the country get more resources to move forward with its development efforts.

She disclosed that the government is working on the issue of taxes in the country as a way of strengthening them to be on par with other nations.

Meanwhile, President Sirleaf is expected to dedicate the Zorzor Rural Teacher Training Institute (ZRTTI) today after its turn-over to government by the United States Aid for International Development (USAID).

The USAID carried out the renovation of the institution which was destroyed during the course of the Liberian Civil War.
