Nigeria: Odogwu-Nwajei Apologises for Beijing Flop

13 November 2008

Athletic Federation of Nigeria president, Violet Odogwu-Nwajei was on live to Sports Radio 88.9 Brila FM's early morning interactive call-in programme, Back Pass on Wednesday, during which she apologized to the 'fans assemb-ly' for her ambiguous statement about the country's performan-ce at the Olympic Games.

Speaking in an emotion laden voice, the former athlete-turned-administrator, however, insisted that her statement about the value of two bronze medals for track and field in Beijing, China was as good as gold was mis-understood.

She explained that there was cause to celebrate the two me-dals, considering the tight cons-traints the AFN has been forced to go through.

"I want to apologize to every-body and I want them to under-stand what I meant by golden-bronze. It was basically about the rough path we had to go through before getting the medals.

"Considering the problems hurdles we are faced with, I reckon getting those two medals was a great achievement, com-pared to others who are winning with drugs.

"I actually feel proud that our team to Beijing was not tainted with doping issues or nay other controversy. I have not failed, but the little we had we used to get those two bronze medals," Odogwu-Nwajei explained.
