The installation of astroturf in the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, will be completed on schedule, the contractor handling the project, Emeka Ukpabi, assured.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Enugu government gave the contractor February, 2009 deadline to finish the job.
NAN reports that Enugu is one of nine Nigerian centres bidding to host matches of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup next year in the country.
Six cities in the country were expected to host matches of the championship billed for November, 2009.
Ukpabi told newsmen on Monday in Enugu that 25 per cent of the job had been completed and assured that the pace of work would be accelerated with the close of the rains season.
NAN reports that the N116 million-contract would cover the replacement of grass by artificial turf as well as the renovation of the Rangers FC practising pitch and the University of Nigeria (UNN), Enugu campus soccer ground.
The contractor, who is the chief executive of Potentate Nigeria Ltd, said the company had removed the grass on the pitch and was now bailing water off the pitch.
