Uganda: FDC Appeals to Rugunda Over Ex-Envoy Beti Kamya

Kampala — Rubaga North MP Beti Kamya and a senior NRM official tried to fabricate information implicating the party in rebel activities, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has alleged.

"Recently, FDC received information that Kamya and a senior NRM official hatched a plot to mobilise Kiboga residents to set up fake guerrilla camps purportedly to implicate FDC leader Dr. Kizza Besigye in anti-government rebel activities," FDC vice-chairman Prof. Morris Ogenga Latigo told the press at Parliament yesterday.

FDC has informed the internal affairs minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and Police chief Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura about the matter.

Rugunda confirmed that he had received the information. "FDC officials last week told me Kamya and an NRM official were mobilising people to engage in rebel activities aimed at implicating FDC. I have directed the Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter," Rugunda said.

He added: "Our sources asserted that the people involved had a link with Kamya and a senior NRM leader from the district."

However, Kamya denied the allegations yesterday. "What! That is wild. I am surprised that they have got to that. I have not been to Kiboga," Kamya said.

On Wednesday, Kamya claimed she had discovered a plot by FDC officials to kill her, following her exposure of how the party manipulated the constitution during the election of the new party chairman.

"I have this information. They were trailing me in Kiboga, around town and everywhere. I have details," Kamya said.

Latigo urged the public to disregard the false allegations levelled against FDC and its leaders by Kamya.

"We caution the country against swallowing Kamya's bait that is meant to pre-empt investigations of what was being cooked against FDC and its leaders," Latigo noted.

He asserted that the claims were a deliberate attempt to divert the public's attention from the National Social Security Fund saga.

"The dispute between Kamya and FDC over her allegations that the party manipulated its constitution was resolved to the satisfaction of our leaders from Buganda, who had been misled by Kamya," Latigo elaborated.

Since August, Kamya has been at loggerheads with FDC after she unsuccessfully sought to replace Dr. Sulaiman Kiggundu as party chairman
