Kampala — GERTRUDE Byanyima, the wife of the former national chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) Boniface Byanyima, is dead.
She passed away at Mulago Hospital at about 2:00pm.
A close family said Gertrude had for a long time suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes and ulcers.
She was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.
Gertrude is also the mother of Winnie Byanyima, the wife of the Forum for Democratic Change president Kizza Besigye.
John Kawanga, a DP veteran and Masaka municipality MP, said: "The party has lost one of its great historicals."
Gertrude was a DP mobiliser until the time of her death.
She was also the head of the DP women wing at the time Dr. Kawanga Ssemwogerere was the party leader.
She campaigned for her daughter, Winnie, for election in the Constitutional Assembly in 1994.
Gertrude and her husband celebrated their golden jubilee wedding anniversary in January.
