Uganda: Lions Start Eye Camp

Kampala — THE Lions Club of the Gulu School of Clinical Officers has started an eye operation camp at Minakulu health centre III in Gulu district.

The camp, initiated by Dr. Ben Watmon, an eye specialist, started on Monday.

Watmon said river blindness was one of the major causes of blindness in the Acholi sub-region.

"This vector is mainly found in Rivers Aswa and Agago, with the most affected areas being Atanga and Awere sub-counties in Pader district. River blindness is not only causing blindness but also epilepsy in children, which has affected the education of the children in the affected areas," Watmon said.

Raphael Komakech, the president of the school club, said the club would carry out a fundraising drive to assist orphans in the district with scholastic materials.
