Uganda: FDC Set to Watch Election

Kampala — THE Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has asked the Electoral Commission to put in place measures that can guarantee free and fair elections in the Kyadondo North race.

The commission, said FDC, should ensure constant monitoring of the campaign rallies to fight all anomalies.

"The law should prevail. We do not want to see envelopes with money being distributed. We want a levelled ground for all candidates," said Lt. Dan Mugarura, the FDC electoral chairman.

Launching Pauline Grace Nakabuye's manifesto, Mugarura asked the commission to watch over possibilities of the ruling NRM party deploying security operatives to scare FDC supporters.

The function held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel on Tuesday, was attended by opposition bigwigs and a cross section of FDC supporters from Wakiso.

In her manifesto, Nakabuye, who is also the official candidate of the interparty coalition, pledged to engage Kyadondo youth and women into productive activities.

Elections for the Kyadondo North Parliamentary seat, which fell vacant after the death of agriculture state minister, Dr. Kibirige Ssebunya last month, are to be held on December 4. Four candidates are contesting.

The interparty coalition has an eight-man team to monitor the elections.
