Uganda: Museveni Dines With Caucus

13 November 2008

Kampala — PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has urged National Resistance Movement MPs to be exemplary by cooperating, uniting and being disciplined.

Museveni also encouraged members to stick to the Movement ideology and remain organised to achieve and sustain the party's objectives.

The President made the appeal at a dinner he and the First Lady, Janet, hosted for the NRM caucus on Wednesday.

A statement from State House yestrday said the dinner was meant to help strengthen harmony and collaboration among the members.

The statement said Museveni appealed to members to work together as a family guided by the doctrines of the Movement Government.

He observed that unlike the old parties, like UNC, DP, UPC and KY, which did not last because of disunity, the NRM government has had several achievements since it came into power in 1986.

He cited some of the achievements as the liberation of the country, restoration of democracy, economic recovery and the building of the future of Uganda through universal education and the Prosperity for All programme.

Museveni also observed that modernisation through social transformation has also been realised in addition to export-oriented growth through industrialisation.

He also pointed out that the core elements of the Movement Government include nationalism as opposed to sectarianism, Pan-Africanism and private sector-led growth, especially in areas of transport, education and telecommunications.

Museveni urged the members and all Ugandans to match together for a common destiny.

The NRM caucus members were recently split over the National Social Security Fund's land transaction with security minister Amama Mbabazi and businessman Amos Nzeyi.

After a heated and prolonged discussion and with the intervention of the President, the members of the Caucus agreed on a common position in favour of Mbabazi and finance minister Dr. Ezra Suruma who were being accused of wrongdoing.
