Uganda: Red Pepper Pays Sh10 Million to Justice Kanyeihamba

Kampala — The Red Pepper, a local tabloid, has paid sh10m in damages to Justice George William Kanyeihamba as out-of-court settlement for a defamation case.

The paper also published an apology for what it referred to as embarrassment, anguish and damages it caused to the judge.

The Supreme Court judge has donated the money towards the renovation of Kanyeihamba Youth Hostel in Rubanda county, Kabale district, his lawyer said.

The court also granted Kanyeihamba a permanent injunction restraining the paper from outrageous publications against him.

Kanyeihamba in 2005 sued The Red Pepper and its editor-in-chief for publishing a libellous article against him in the paper's issue of March 30 and April 1, 2004.

During the proceedings, the paper accepted to settle the case out-of-court and signed a consent judgement.

The Red Pepper, however, did not pay Kanyeihamba in time, prompting him to obtain a warrant to attach and sell the paper's property, which forced the paper to pay him.
