Uganda: Premier Resettles Karimojong

Kampala — THE Office of the Prime Minister has resettled 936 Karimojong in the green belt of Nakayot parish, Puto Dadaang in Moroto district.

This is to improve their livelihoods and maintain peace and unity among the tripartite ethnic groups.

The three groups are the Bokora, Matheniko and the Pian.

The regional coordinator of the EU-funded Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Programme, Stefan Kluger, on Monday said the resettling of the groups who have been conflicting for so long was a good move.

Addressing the resettled community, Kluger said: "I wish the other communities could follow suit so that they can sustain themselves in this fertile belt."

He said the Government was interested in seeing Karamoja stable and people resettled in the fertile areas.

"Let us diversify our livelihoods other than relying on animals," Kluger said, adding that over-dependence on animals had led to poverty and persistent raids, resulting into pre-mature death.

He said a road that connectis Lorengechora to Nabilatuk would soon open, to ease transport for the resettled communities.

The Community Livestock Integrated Development consultancy team leader, Shean Valery, said: "Copy what the communities in Nabwal are doing after the Government resettled them a year ago." Her organisation is also engaged in resettling the communities.

Shean said resettling the people in the green belt could reduce dependence on World Food Programme hand-outs.

After many attempts to pull the Karimojong from their homesteads, Govern-ment last year resettled about 10,000 people in Nabwal.
