Kampala — RESIDENTS of Otong internally displaced people's (IDP) camp in Amuru district are facing a water shortage.
According to the camp LC1 secretary, Silver Nyeko Lagole, some of the boreholes had broken down and needed to be repaired to ease pressure on the two functioning ones.
Lagole on Sunday, also said there was a threat of cholera outbreak and other diseases due to lack of latrines.
"The latrine coverage in the camp is low and as a result, some of the camp residents resort to using the nearby tall grass to dispose of faeces. With the current heavy rains there is a likelihood of a cholera outbreak and other sanitation-related diseases.
"We, therefore, appeal to the district authority and agencies operating in the district to provide us with equipment to help us dig our own latrines," Lagole said.
He said the residents had not yet returned to their villages due to fear of the Lord's Resistance Army rebel attacks since the Juba peace talks had not been concluded.
Meanwhile, rice farmers in the camp have had a plentiful harvest.
