"Businessmen and women should realise the potential in the music industry. In fact, they first need to recognise that music is an industry, then invest in it. You will be amazed at the number of jobs that you would create."
But make no mistake; Makeba was not all music and politics.
During the same unpublished interview with this writer, she appealed to the youth to abstain from sex or use condoms to reduce the risk of HIV infection.
She said HIV/AIDs had claimed a lot of lives in Africa, and as such, it should be taken seriously by everyone.
"We must take care of each other, whether positive or negative. We should help one another in any way possible. For those who are sick, we need to ensure that they are getting treatment and the right diet," she said.
Makeba, who was also South Africa's goodwill ambassador, said she agreed with Thabo Mbeki that the best way to fight HIV/AIDS was by reducing poverty.
But whether you agree with that or not, one thing is true; Africa has lost one of its most shining stars.
