South Africa: Henyekane Puts Arrows Before Bafana

After hammering their Telkom Knockout Cup conquerors Ajax Cape Town 4-0 on Wednesday in eThekwini, Golden Arrows - the Absa Premiership's team of the moment - travel to Olympia Park this weekend with the log leadership carrot dangling before their eyes.

If they beat Moroka Swallows and current leaders Bidvest Wits lose or draw against SuperSport this weekend, Arrows will go top of the log after eight games.

It will be another challenging afternoon in Rustenburg for Julio Leal's inconsistent Birds as they come face to face with South Africa's latest goal phenomenon.

Richard Henyekane, Arrows' striker whose hat-trick helped Abafana Bes'thende humiliate mighty Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout Cup first round last month, hit another threesome against Ajax in the League, this after his lone strike sunk Maritzburg United last week.

He had scored a brace when the KwaZulu-Natal giant-slayers brushed aside Mamelodi Sundowns 4-2 in their own backyard.

"In the Telkom Knockout Cup, we played well in the first half against Ajax, then they scored their first goal and we lost our morale," says Henyekane referring to high riding Arrows' comeuppance against the Urban Warriors at Athlone Stadium.

"Before the League game our coach (Manqoba Mngqithi), who is really a good coach with a vision for the future, told us to forget about the last game. Everybody was cheerful. The coach always tells us not to lose focus."

With his recent goal-grabbing exploits, the spotlight has inevitably fallen upon the 25 year-old. As usual he is modest about his achievements.

"I treat every newspaper, every radio station the same and say the same thing: I don't want to be put on the map, in football you don't play alone. You just told me Samuel Eto'o scored four goals for Barcelona last week. For him to score those goals, he needed the support of his teammates. It's not only about Richard, the support that I have been getting from my teammates and the technical team as well has been marvelous."

Representing Bafana Bafana is also not a big deal, he says.

"Everybody is saying I must be in the national team, but I am concentrating on my team, Bafana will come as a bonus. My teammates and the coach have also told me so."

Henyekane, who hails from Kimberley's Galeshewe township, the hometown of Chiefs' Jimmy Tau, says Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo are his favourite players. Small wonder - he has always loved scoring goals.

"I was always a striker from the juniors and scored a lot of goals. When I grew up Thierry Henry was my favourite players, but he had a bad season in 2007/08. Now I go for Cristiano Ronaldo."

Joining Arrows in 2004/05 jointly with his younger brother Joseph, Henyekane scored a measly four goals in 25 starts and found the net only once in four starts and 13 substitute appearances the following season. 2006/07 yielded just a couple of goals from five starts and last season was no better as he nabbed only one goal in four starts and substituted eight times thanks to a lengthy spell on the sidelines with knee trouble.

However, having a good pre-season meant 2008/09 started great for a player in his biological peak.

"When you get injured it is difficult to get back into the team because you are starting all over again. But this year things have been different, not only for me. The coach and the technical team are really looking after us. It's unbelievable how fit we are, we can run all 90 minutes while before we used to run up to 70 minutes."
