Sierra Leone: King Jimmy Lacks Toilet, Water Supply

Secretary general of the King Jimmy market traders association has told Concord Times that their market lacks toilet facilities, water and better storage area.

Speaking at the King Jimmy Market, Makuta Mansarry said over three hundred market people restroom in the sea at the market for lack of toilet facilities.

Mansarry said the market doesn't have any toilet for them to use, despite the fact that they are paying their duties.

"We need a toilet so that we will not use the sea as a toilet," she said, adding that the lack of toilets is not the only problem, as the market doesn't have store and water facility. "Water is the basic thing that every women being need."

Chief administrator officer of the Freetown City Council Bowoenl Philip said the council was not aware that the market doesn't have toilets.

"Nobody came to us and complained," he said. "We didn't know that there is no toilet, we know that every market is supposed to have toilets. Now that we have known we will go there to see what is the problem. We are very concerned over the welfare of all market women in the City."

Philip also said the FCC has a marketing municipality that is responsible for market facilities. He said they will make sure that they have toilets in all the markets that they are currently constructing

Another trader, Hawa Sesay, said because the market doesn't have store she cannot buy enough supplies for her business. "We need all the facilities that we are supposed to have," Sesay said, adding that the problem of toilet was the big problem to them.
