Angola: Country Addresses Nuclear Energy Conference

Renousa — The Angolan delegation attending the Winter Nuclear Energy Conference going on since November 9 in Reno, Nevada, United States of America, addressed the panel on "Perspectives on nuclear energy in developing countries."

A note from the Angolan diplomatic mission to the USA that reached Angop Thursday, says that speaking for Angola were the ministers of Energy and of Science and Technology, Emanuela Vieira Lopes and Maria Cândida Teixeira, respectively.

Maria Cândida Teixeira spoke of the domains in which Angola intends to use the nuclear energy, namely in health, agriculture and industry, oil and diamonds.

"Angolan Government recognises the importance of the nuclear science and technology in the world population's socio-economic development, particularly the Angolan population, when it is used in a responsible way, protecting individuals and the environment," said Maria Cândida Teixeira.

In her turn, the minister of Energy, Emanuela Afonso Vieira Lopes, said her institution is considering to propose to the authorities concerned the creation of academic programmes under the education curricula, from the basis to higher research, with a view to the promotion of the knowledge on nuclear energy.

"We hope that the associations present to be interested to provide assistance to our country in upgrading and implementing of modern programmes in the fields of medicine, veterinary and others," she added.

The official underlined that the Angolan law on atomic energy contains specification concerning its peaceful ends, stressing Angolan Government's intentions in this specific field.

The note from the embassy further states that the ministers' addresses were received at the meeting with much interest.

The Winter Nuclear Energy Conference has been organised by the US Association on Nuclear Energy.
