13 November 2008

Luanda — The honorary member of the Angolan Olympic Committee (COA), Rogério Silva, said that the contribution to national unity was the major value the sports sector provided the country with during the 33 years of independence.

Rogério Silva, who was speaking on the sidelines of the gala of homage to former athletes dubbed "Glories of the Angolan Football", on the sports' deeds during the 33 years of independence, noted that it was through this that Angolans remained united with the holding of competitions in the country's 18 provinces.

He considered that national sports have a rich history with good and bad moments and due to the conditions imposed by the years of conflicts you can say that Angolans overcame the constraints.

Whilst COA's chairman, Rogério Silva used to be asked at world conferences on the exceptional results in the sports field, despite the armed conflict, said the official, who gave the example of successes achieved in basketball, handball, chess and judo.

According to the source, these positive results were made possible thanks to good concentration of some technicians who reversed the difficult situation.

Rogério Silva said that all the steps made towards exalting national sports, so far, were attributed to the initiative of the creation of an organ of central government that could respond to sports called the secretary of physical education and sports, founded in 1979.

The former chairperson of the Angolan Chess Federation (FAX) affirmed that the II Central Africa Games held in1981 were the major competition held in the country with great success, assing that the country hopes that the same happens with the 2010 African Cup of Nations in football to take place in Angola, in the provinces of Luanda, Benguela, Cabinda and Huíla.
