Luanda — At least 1,500 national physicians have been trained at the Américo Boavida Hospital (HAB) during the 33 years of the country's independence, which was achieved on November 11, 1975.
This information was granted to ANGOP this Thursday by the chairman of the management board of the referred hospital, Carlos Mariano Manuel, under the celebrations of the 33rd anniversary of the proclamation of the national independence.
Founded in 1958 as "São Paulo" Hospital and initially designed for treating cases related to labour accidents, the HAB witnessed, during the last 33 years, a substantial growth, with the emerging of new services and infrastructures, the official said.
He explained that the hospital resulted from the merger between the medical training hospital entrusted to the faculty of medicine of the former University of Angola and of the "São Paulo" hospital.
Carlos Mariano affirmed that during the referred period there was the need to broaden services with view to respond to the patients' demand. This fact demanded a high-quality medical assistance, in accordance to the instructions of the Health Ministry.
With a hospitalisation capacity of 810 patients, the Américo Boavida Hospital currently operates with 25 different services, and has 123 effective physicians, 38 collaborators, 662 nurses and 172 administrative staff and another 169 workers.
