Ghana: Election 2008 Not 'Do Or Die' Affair - Samira

Kofi Agyepong

13 November 2008

Samira Bawumia, wife of NPP's vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said that the forthcoming general elections might be critical but "it's not a do or die affair."

Addressing party supporters at Juapong and Ho Polytechnic as part of a day's tour of the Volta Region, Mrs Bawumia said with an NPP leadership, Ghana is at a threshold of massive economic transformation and called on Ghanaians to vote massively for the NPP to realize that dream.

Mrs. Bawumia chided rival political parties that have promised to continue the programmes of the NPP, saying "they are only playing politics...why didn't they do it when they were in power?"

She mentioned the National School Feeding Programme, the National Health Insurance Scheme, the free antenatal care among other pro-poor policies of the NPP government and said the government would do more.

Madam Samira also laughed off the comparison the NDC is making between their presidential candidate Prof. Mills and US President elect, Barack Obama.

"How can you present a twice defeated person as an Obama of Ghana politics... we have come a long way and we will not jeopardize our future," she said.

Dr. Bawumia's wife was confident that the voting pattern in the Volta Region would change in this year's elections. She assured the electorate of free and fair elections and pleaded with them to be circumspect in their utterances. "We don't need to fight...look at Kenya and Zimbabwe, we have to be an example for others to follow," she said.

At the Juapong market, where she introduced the parliamentary candidate for the area, Moses Assem, Samira called on the people to vote massively for the NPP.

"The whole Volta Region has only one NPP MP, it is not good, send more of the NPP men to Parliament and they would ensure that your needs are addressed," she said.

At Ho Polytechnic, Mrs. Bawumia urged the students to be ambassadors of peace and not allow themselves to be used by any political party to cause mayhem during the forthcoming polls.
