Nigeria: Business Booms for Broom Sellers in Benin

Broom-the symbol of Action Congress (AC)-is in high demand in Benin and environs since Adams Oshiomole took over as Edo governor, reports the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

NAN Correspondent reports that broom sellers in the area have been making huge sales since the former NLC president was confirmed winner of the 2007 gubernatorial election by the Court of Appeal in Benin on Tuesday.

Mrs Margaret Idugboe, who sells brooms at the Uselu market in Benin , told NAN that she made "good money" on Tuesday and Wednesday, thanking Oshiomhole for the booming trade. Another trader at Oliha market, who identified himself as James, said he had foreseen that there would be high demand for broom if Oshiomhole won and so he had purchased large quantities of the commodity, which handsomely paid off. NAN correspondent reports that a broom, which normally sold at between N20 and N50 went up to N100 on the day of Oshiomhole's victory at the Court of Appeal and during his swearing-in on Wednesday in Benin. Oshiomhole said on Wednesday during his swearing-in that "you the electorate have transformed this broom into a veritable weapon of societal transformation. Each time this broom is waved, it symbolically chases away all forces of darkness; the broom is the greatest weapon against all forms of economic, social and political evils," Oshiomhole declared.
