SPECIAL Olympics Namibia (SON) will on Saturday commemorate its 10th anniversary in Rundu.
Special Olympics is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering people with intellectual disability to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition.
The 10th anniversary celebration will kick off with the lighting of a Special Olympics torch that will be carried by SON athletes from the Engen petrol station to the Rundu sports stadium where the event will take place.
Kavango Regional Governor John Thighuru and the region's education director Alfons Dikuua will address the audience.
During the commemoration, SON athletes will display their individual soccer skills in five-a-side soccer matches, as well as 80-metre sprint races.
SON is operating in six regions, namely Oshana, Omusati, Ohangwena, Karas, Khomas and Kavango.
SON athletes are trained in soccer, softball and short sprints.
As for the Kavango Region, a total of 33 coaches have so far been trained and they give training to one or more athletes with intellectual disabilities on a regular basis.
