editorial
Even as Lagos State aims to become a mega city, it is imperative that government prohibits trucks and other vehicles, which cause air pollution through their exhaust pipes. Their activities are sickening, as they pollute the atmosphere with their smokes. It is more dangerous for asthmatic passengers and passers-by.
Many asthmatic patients have been caught between life and death when rickety vehicles discharge fumes to the atmosphere. The situation is worsened whenever there is traffic congestion, as vehicles move bumper to bumper on the road. Such vehicles abound almost on every road in Lagos with noisy sound. The commercial vehicles are the worse in this regard.
The health implications of the smoke for passengers and other road users, especially asthmatic patients, should be a major concern for the government and other agencies, such as FRSC and LASTMA, that monitor vehicles on the road. Government should promulgate a law that would prohibit the use of smoky vehicles on the roads. As the state is being transformed into a mega city, machineries should be put in place to ensure that not only the roads meet international standard, but also the vehicles plying the roads.
