Nigeria: U.S., Army Begin Search for HIV Vaccine

Abuja — The United States Department of Defence and its counterpart in Nigeria has concluded arrangement to jointly fund the establishment of a laboratory that would be strictly dedicated to research on vaccine for HIV/AIDS, Malaria and typhoid fever.

Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Fidelia Njeze, made the disclosure, saying that the research laboratory would be located at the Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja while receiving the delegation of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, U.S. the minister disclosed that the collaborative efforts against HIV/AIDS between the two countries have resulted in 14 functional centres across military formations in the country.

She added that the centres have attended to over 94, 000 patients, stressing that 7, 000 had received treatment and counseled and the number of the centres will be increased to 20 soon.

In his remarks, leader of the delegation, who is the Deputy Commander of the institute, Colonel Donald Heppner, said they were in the country to assess the level of progress on the collaboration.
