Uganda: Warriors Defiant

Kampala — BRIAN Gumisiriza put his imposing frame to good use, sinking in a team high 17 points as Kyambogo Warriors humbled champions Mogas Falcons 85-73 to even the best of 3 MTN Basketball playoff semifinals series 1-1.

Gumisiriza made up for Steven Okias who sustained an ankle injury in Game 1 and only had five minutes of play.

Okias did not score points for the team that won the first quarter 23-17.

Inspired by FUBA president Ambrose Tashobya's presence on their bench, Warriors put up a memorable display that saw bench-player Francis Kasekende contribute 11 points to their tally.

Gumisiriza and Ronnie Kasewu run the show with typical aplomb, managing 17 and 16 points respectively.

Nelson Wafula and Albert Aciku both netted 13 points for the Warriors.

Joshua Etalu scored 6 points but his defensive resilience was key in helping the Warriors establish a 20-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

They kept the lead until the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to claim the win and remind the Falcons that the contest is still on.

Falcons' Henry Malinga top-scored in the first game with 21 points but on Thursday managed only 7 after fouling out with 8:07 to play in the fourth quarter.

His brother Eric scored a game-high 25 points and Francis Tumusiime added 15 but that fell short of matching Warriors.

In the women's semifinal, Gloria Kyomugisha's A-1 Challenge beat champions KCC Leopards 43-32 to storm the finals.
