Kampala — THE Vision Group media house has won four awards from the Population Secretariat and United Nations Population Fund. The New Vision emerged the best newspaper while its three scribes excelled in covering population and development issues in 2008.
The awards were given out during the launch of the state of Uganda and world population reports at Hotel Africana on Wednesday.
Ben Okiror's entry on the need for parents to produce children they can look after was voted the best in the print category. The article urged men to actively participate in family planning and to support their wives in accessing reproductive health services.
Elizabeth Agiro's series on the plight of civil servants emerged the best in the gender category. She focused on the working and living conditions of nurses, Police, teachers and office messengers.
Michael Wambi's radio feature on Vision Voice was on moon-beads as a contraceptive method. It looked at how women who had used them had succeeded in controlling birth and how all religions had embraced it unlike other methods.
Speaking before the awards were given out, the chairman of the awards committee, David Musoke of the East African said the selection process was transparent.
While handing out the awards, the Gender minister, Syda Bumba, commended the media for playing an important role in social development.
