Angola: Growth Indispensable - Minister

Luanda — Angolan minister of Economy, Manuel Nunes Júnior, Friday in Luanda, spoke out of the need for an effort towards a speedier and sustainable development of the economy, in order to avert the negative impact of the world financial crisis.

The minister was speaking during the a session of the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament) that approval of the State Budget for 2009 and corresponding Government National Plan.

According to him, there is need for mechanisms to prevent scarce credit in the world market and thus secure the continuity of the country's development.

He said the world financial crisis is already reflected on the oil price, caused by the world economic recessions, which calls for the diversification of the national economy.

Angola's economic growth in the 2006/08 period was more accentuated in the oil sector as asserted by the 2008 data. Until the end of this year, the oil sector is expected to grow 11,5 percent, against the non-oil's estimated at 18,6 percent.

Therefore, the minister added, the growth for 2009 in the oil sector is estimated at 5,9 percent, against 15,8 of the non-oil.

He also spoke of the need for a boost in the sectors of industry, agriculture and fishery, with a view to a momentum in the fight against unemployment and famine, coupled with the diversification of the sources of revenues for the national economy.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly on Friday approved the State Budget for 2009 with 158 votes in favour, none against and 27 abstentions, during a session chaired by the speaker, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.
