Former Super Eagles player, Ganiu Ajide has added his voice to growing disdain at Joseph Yobo and Danny Shittu, with a terse declaration that they are not world class players.
The regular feature during the qualifying series for the France '98 World Cup told brilafm.net that Yobo and Shittu, despite their rating in England, are still far from the level of Uche Okechukwu and need to step up their game.
"The players in our defence for now are not just up to standard. Remember Uche Okechukwu had the strength to play good football, unlike what we have now.
"He was very dynamic, but Yobo and Shittu are not world class. I am not saying they are not good players, but they should not be rated excellent," he opined.
Meanwhile, with Beijing Olympics silver medalist, Chinedu Ogbuke Obasi leading the way for fast-ring players into the senior national team, former Green Eagles star, Dr Felix Owolabi has called for caution in celebrations of the emergent stars. Owolabi said in a chat with brilafm.net that Nigeria has never been short of young talents and downplayed the performance of all young players now making waves for both club and country.
"It's not proper to keep on celebrating players who are doing well for the moment, because we all know that those who are there now will one day leave. There's every reason for another player to take over from where the others stopped. That's why we should stop blowing the trumpets of players sensationally," he advised.
