Tunisia: President Ben Ali Receives Portugal's Foreign Affairs Minister

Tunis — President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali received on Friday, Portugal's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Louis Amado. Tunisian-Portuguese relations, the prospect of boosting bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international issues were under focus.

Following the meeting, Mr Amado said that the meeting reviewed the relations between both countries in light of the forthcoming high- level meeting scheduled early next year.

Portugal's Foreign Affairs Minister, said that he had informed President Ben Ali of his country's commitment to boost bilateral relations, as well as economic cooperation on the occasion of this meeting, in the framework of the friendship, cooperation, and good- neighborliness treaty signed between both countries.

He added that the meeting had evoked relations with the European Union ,as well as those with the Arab Maghreb Union, stressing the fact that he had "congratulated the Head of State for Tunisia' advanced status and the future perspectives of its relations with the European Union".

Mr Amado said that the meeting also evoked current international issues, such as the financial crisis, relations with Africa and the issue of the Middle East, as well as items included on the governmental agendas of both countries.

The meeting took place in the presence of the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Portugal's Ambassador in Tunis.
