Harare — THE Zanu-PF Harare provincial leadership has suspended Harare South legislator Cde Hubert Nyanhongo from carrying out any party activities following an altercation over the upcoming provincial restructuring exercise.
Cde Nyanhongo is challenging the incumbent, Cde Amos Midzi, for the post of provincial chairman.
Also barred from carrying out party activities is National Incomes and Pricing Commission chairman Cde Godwills Masimirembwa and other Zanu-PF supporters linked to Cde Nyanhongo.
Cde Nyanhongo and Cde Midzi's supporters clashed at the provincial offices last week as campaigning for a new leadership reached fever pitch.
Cde Nyanhongo is Zanu-PF's sole legislator in the House of Assembly from Harare and it is on that basis that he is challenging Cde Midzi.
Cde Nyanhongo's supporters are unhappy with Cde Midzi's leadership, which they say failed to mobilise the people to vote for the party in the March 29 harmonised elections as well as in previous polls.
Although Cde Midzi could not be reached for comment, Cde Nyanhongo yesterday confirmed being served with a prohibition order by the provincial leadership."They have stopped us from carrying out party activities, including addressing people in Harare," he said.
Cde Nyanhongo branded the ban as tantamount to intimidation and vowed to continue with his activities in the province.
"We are proceeding with our activities in the province, which they seek to disturb," he said.
Cde Nyanhongo said he would today submit a report explaining his position on the dispute to Zanu-PF Secretary for Finance Cde David Karimanzira, in his capacity as the head of a committee overseeing the restructuring process in Harare Province,.
Last week Cde Karimanzira confirmed there had been skirmishes in the province allegedly perpetrated by supporters linked to the feuding politicians.
"There have been some clashes and divisions in Harare Province. We do not want to see violence because an opportunity has been given to everyone to campaign.
"I have asked the MP for Harare South to indicate where he thinks things are not going well (in the restructuring exercise). He promised to give me a written response. He has not done that (yet)," he said.
Cde Midzi and his deputy Cde Christopher Chigumba could not be reached for comment.
