The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has disclosed that no fewer than 6,110 Nigerians lost their lives annually to road traffic accidents across the country hence advising road users to adhere strictly to road traffic rules especially during the festive periods to check the disturbing trend.
This disclosure was made by the Benue State Sector Commander of the commission, Mr. Sobowale Gbenga-Oke during the commemoration of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Accident Victims in Makurdi.
According to the Sector Commander who stood in for the Corp Marshall, Mr. Osita Chidoka at the United Nations General Assembly on the 26th of October passed and adopted Resolution A/60/5 aimed at improving global safety on the roads with a mandate on member nations to observe the resolution.
He noted that the gruesome scenario calls for all well meaning Nigerians to soberly reflect and remember all those killed in road traffic crashes and the families they left behind by focusing on the alarming scale of death and injuries resulting from the carnage on our roads.
The FRSC boss warned that the precious lives of Nigerians must not be put at risk by those who recklessly ply major roads in the country advising that ember months are fraught with hazy weather and poor visibility stressing that road users must avoid situations where their safety is left entirely to divine intervention.
"Admonish yourselves on the need to drive with caution especially during the ember months as we go about celebrating and traveling as careless drivers abound on the highways," he warned.
