Uganda: Kyadondo Battering Bad for Rugby

opinion

Kampala — UGANDA rugby union's disciplinary committee convenes tomorrow to look into a very recent ugly incident in the sport that saw high profile national players of uganda telecom Kobs RFC beat up a referee during the quarter-final of the Hima 10's tournament between MTN Heathens and the Kobs.

Dr. Alike Okello's seven-man committee will investigate the incident in which players Fred Mudoola,Victor Wadia and Steven Ogwete beat referee George Collins Mulindwa.

According to Uganda Rugby Union secretary Paul Nyangabyaki, there is evidence Mudoola, Ogwete and Wadia manhandled the referee after he made a foul caution against their side.

Hooliganism and indiscipline aside, it was very disturbing to see scenes of persons highly educated and from the affluent community going native in a sport that has of late attracted scores of fans from Kampala's middle and working class.

The football federation FUFA was, until the Kyadondo rugby ground incident, leader in hooliganism cases. The federation currently embroiled in a case where fans are said to have disrupted a league game between Express FC and Bunamwaya. Express were docked six points and a cash fine of sh2m which was reduced to sh1m on appeal.

Sports is all about passion and participation. But if the key players who even feature for the Rugby Cranes, turn crazy - beating up referees in broad daylight because of an officiation call - then we are doomed. It set a very bad example to the youth to whom the players are role models.
