Kampala — NILE Breweries has rewarded farmers who grow epuripur sorghum.
The epuripur sorghum is used to make Eagle Lager and Eagle Extra brands of beer.
The farmers, who were drawn from several districts that grow sorghum, received their prizes at the company's plant in Jinja.
The best farmer was William Ebiaru from Soroti who won a generator.
Lira Farmers Centre was the best farmers' group and was rewarded with a 29-inch television.
Nile Breweries' managing g director Nick Jenkinson said: "We are here because of a seven-year relationship we have with you. Nile Breweries has made sorghum, a crop hitherto with no commercial value, worth growing. We are interested in a long-term partnership. We are here to stay, guarantee a fair price and will buy all the sorghum." The farmers were also given a talk on how to manage businesses.
