Ghana: Bench Warming Order of the Day

Ghana's Black Stars will assemble in Accra today ahead of Wednesday's international friendly but many of them will come with a season of regular bench warming and not regular players as the past weekend showed.

The story of Ghanaian players plying their trade in Europe was another of bench warming that should give Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac cause for concern even though the resumption of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers is not on until March 2009.

Richard Kingson, likely to be first choice goalkeeper for Wednesday's friendly against Tunisia was again a mere fan as Wigan Athletic snatched a late goal to draw 2-2 against Newcastle United.

Hans Sarpei earned a re-call into the Black Stars but it seems it was based more on experience than anything. After a long stretch on the injury list, Sarpei is back but as regular member of the Leverkusen bench. He was there again as they beat Schalke 04 2-1 to go top of the German Bundesliga.

Eric Addo is another of the players called up for Wednesday but he again watched from the bench as Ajax Amsterdam routed PSV Eindhovein 4-1.

In Russia Haminu Dramani's frustration at sitting on the bench grows after he was left out entirely of Locomotive Moscow's 3-2 win FC Moscow.

He will be one of the midfielders on call for Rajevac alongside Dede Ayew whose return to the Stade Vellodrome for Lorient versus Marseille did not end the day as he wanted.

Lorient won 3-2 after clawing back from a 0-2 deficit but Dede was left on the bench for the entire duration of the game.

Meanwhile in the same French League, Moussa Narry whose decision not to turn up for the Ghana game against Lesotho has angered Rajevac was playing a starring role in Auxerre's 1-0 win over Socheaux.

It's not all inactivity and gloom for the men Rajevac has called up though. Matthew Amoah did not get on the score sheet but played his part in NAC Breda's 3-0 win over Heracles that has taken the side level on points at the top of the Dutch League.

John Paintsil played the entire duration of the game as Fulham handed Tottenham Hotspurs their first defeat in seven games while Sulley Muntari returned to action for Inter Milan in a defensive midfield role as they beat Palermo 2-0 to return to the top of Serie A.
