Abuja — Director General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Idi Faruk, has called for a common identity for Nigerians on pilgrimage to Mecca as a way of projecting the oneness and unity of the country.
He made the call in Abuja while delivering a lecture entitled "Attitudinal changes by the pilgrims during the performance of Hajj" organised by Comerel Travels and Tours.
Faruk expressed concern over a situation whereby pilgrims are identified by their state uniform, stating that it should no longer be so because it is not good for the country's image.
"It is strongly recommended that a single uniform be agreed upon and adopted as uniform for all Nigerian pilgrims like their counterparts the world over," he said.
The NOA boss, however, said badges or symbols could be allowed for the purpose of state identification, adding that there was urgent need to protect the unity and oneness of Nigeria.
He added that the symbol of strength, pride and unity of every sovereign state was the hoisting of its national flag, advising that Nigerian flag should be hoisted at Nigerian medical mission, pilgrims' residential areas and other camps within Saudi Arabia.
He advised that National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) that apart from generally enhancing the image of country, it should also provide flags and location signs for the pilgrims.
