Minna — Nigeria has the requisit knowledge and natural resources to produce rubber both for domestic and export purposes.

This assertion was made by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Federal University of Technology Minna Professor, M. A. Suleiman yesterday.

The university teacher in his inaugural lecture entitled, "The economic potential of natural rubber production in Nigeria," said Nigeria was among a few countries in the world that had abundant natural rubber threes capable of satisfying both domestic and international demands.

He said if Nigeria exploited the potential the production of rubber availed, it would boost the economy as a potent income earner.

He however lamented a situation where in the midst of abundance, Nigeria was still importing rubber for industrial use.

"The plastics derived from natural rubber constitute an importer sector of the economy and requires necessary attention in terms of building the foundation for the achievement of self-sufficiency in local raw natural rubber production," he said.
