Tunisia:Head of State Plants Olive Tree On the Occasion of National Tree Day

Tunis — President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali planted on Sunday an olive tree, in the garden of the centre for burns and trauma which he had previously inaugurated in the governorate of Ben Arous.

The move comes as part of Tunisia's celebration of National Tree Day.

On this occasion, the Head of State took cognizance of forestation rate, as well as the up keeping of green area during the 2007-2008 period.

9472 hectares were planted achieving a success rate of 60%, and 6038 hectares of forest shrubs were also planted with a success rate of 61%, which results in 15,510 hectares covered.

The number of trees planted by enterprises, schools and hospitals has reached some 757,000 trees, with a success rate of 55%.

President Ben Ali expressed his satisfaction as to the results achieved by the programs he had launched, to extend and develop green areas in towns.

These achievements have enabled each citizen to benefit from an average of 15,37 square meters per inhabitant in 18 governorates in 2008, thus exceeding the objective set for the year 2009, which was of 15 square meters for each inhabitant.

The Head of State recommended the boosting and streamlining of the operations of distribution of tree plants to the municipalities and rural councils, so as to further improve forestation results in the different regions of the country.
