Addis Ababa — Nokia East Africa branch on Thursday launched a new device specifically designed for African mobile users, which the company said as a response for an increase in demand for new mobile device model in the emerging markets of Africa.

The devices tagged Nokia 5000 and Nokia 1680 classic are currently getting into the market, with an expected price range from USD 80 to USD 144, before applicable taxes or subsidies, said the company.

Briefing journalists here in Addis Ababa, Nokia's East African representatives said the new products were designed specifically for users in the area and "brings a balance of features, design and affordability to meet every lifestyle and budget." Among the products, the Nokia 5000 offers a 1.3 mega-pixel camera and a large QVGA display, which according to the company is "Nokia's first mega-pixel camera-phone at this price point, as well as music and email capabilities." Supported by its technology to capable of using more than 80 languages (including Amharic), the company estimated more than one billion people worldwide currently use a Nokia device.

Gerard Brandjes, Nokia general manager for East Africa, said there is an increase in demand for mobile phone with a newer, more advanced model in the region.

"Their expectations and demands in terms of functionality and design are similar to people in any other part of the world. They simply have less income at their disposal," the manager said.

"The introduction of Nokia's most affordable mega-pixel camera-phone and stylish phones, demonstrates Nokia's firm commitment to bringing products that serve the varied needs and tastes of people in emerging markets." Together with Glorious PLC, Nokia recently authorized BravoCom as their retailers in Ethiopia, with both of them offering a 12 month warranty to their customers.
